Karate For Jacob
Because Jacob stays with us on most weekends, we try to let him do something that ONLY HE can do and not have the quads involved as well. He is the "big brother" you know, and SHOULD be able to do things that the little ones can't do just yet.
Karate is one of those "big boy" things! He started karate about 6 weeks ago --- was very apprehensive at first -- was scared of the instructor and tried very hard not to cry the entire first karate lesson. Looking back I can readily understand why he was scared and intimidated -- he is only 4 1/2 years old and the ages of the students in the class range from probably 6 to 12.
We were told by one of the other fathers not to let him "talk us out of coming" - we should MAKE him come and after the first 4 or 5 weeks he will be wanting to come. That father was SO RIGHT!!! The second week Jacob cried all the way there and most of the time during the karate lessons, but every week got easier as he learned the "moves". The instructor had assigned one of the 10 year old girls to help him, which helped a lot.

The fifth week we were notified that Jacob had qualified to test for the yellow belt --- which he passed, so I'd like to proudly show you little Jacob getting his "speech" from the instructor, and then getting his yellow belt.

The instructor explained how PROUD he was of Jacob -- said he has progressed MORE in the first 5 weeks than any other 4 year old he has ever taught! We LOVE you Jacob and are also very proud of you.
Last Saturday we had everybody at our house and I had "arranged" for Papaw to take Jacob to karate, and the quads could stay with me at home. Well, Papaw had other ideas --- he thought the "babies" should go watch Jacob at karate. I just about had a heart attack -- "you MUST be kidding"! Papaw usually wins, so we all went to watch Jacob. Papaw introduced the little ones to the instructor as his "future students", and we proceeded to sit them in front row seats to watch. Those little ones were SO GOOD (probably scared because they usually don't get to go very far) --- sat as still as church mice. During the practice the instructor came over and complimented us on how good all the little ones were, to which Papaw replied "don't jinx it"!
After the practice, all the little ones wanted to talk about was "next time can we go with Jacob again?" As soon as their mother walked in to pick them up, there were four little ones yelling louder than the others "we went to Karate today". And Jacob can't wait to start teaching them all his karate moves!!
