Money For Christmas????

With the economy as it is, I'm wondering how many people will have the Christmas that they'd really like to have.  With people losing jobs, cut backs on working hours, etc, it's getting harder and harder to pay the mortgage payment and utility bills, let alone have dollars left over for goodies for Christmas.

One of my sons sets up a special account every January tagged "Christmas", and puts a few dollars in it every payday.  He's teaching his 7 year old daughter and 5 year old son how to save for bigger toy items that they want.  Well, by the first of December, his family has money to head out and make the purchases they want for their own family, and to give others for Christmas.

However, for the majority of us, just paying bills each payday, or deciding which to let go until the next payday so we can buy groceries is the name of the game, not "put a few dollars into a special account".

A few days ago I was talking to one of my neighbors, a single Mom with 2 children, and we were talking about her lack of funds this year for Christmas spending.  All of a sudden, two brain cells rubbed together, and almost at the same time we said what we needed to have is a giant yard sale to clear out some of the "stuff" that is no longer being used so that we can make a few dollars for Christmas gifts.

That little conversation got the ball rolling --- we're organizing a subdivision wide yard sale --- every house puts out their own stuff to sell, but we, as organizers are getting it set up.   We've made flyers announcing the yard sale and have put them into the doors of every house in the subdivision inviting them to participate.   My neighbor will call in the ad to the newspaper announcing the "subdivision yard sale" which normally brings all the yard salers out BEFORE they head to individual houses in other parts of the town.  My husband and I are making the yard sale signs and will be putting them on all the strategic street corners leading people to our subdivision - the signs will be put out Thursday evening so people can see them all day Friday, then come on in Saturday to the sale.

We have about 50 houses in our subdivision, and if we can get a good number of people to participate, it will be really nice for those yard salers who would stop by our subdivision before heading other places.

Need a little extra money and have some stuff you'd like to clear out of your house?  Consider organizing one of these yard sales for your subdivision.   If nobody wants to go along, just do your own thing and hold your own yard sale -- I'm sure you'll get rid of a few things and who knows how much money you'll bring in that you can spend on Christmas.

I'll let you know how our sale goes after it's over and done with!!
