Pattern making ideas

Because I do a lot of pattern making and pattern "changing", I thought I'd pass along a couple of ideas that I've found are very helpful to me.  First, when you go into your local fabric shop, look at the patterns books - Simplicity, McCalls, etc.  If they don't already have somebody's name on them, ask if you can have the pattern book when it becomes outdated.  The store usually sells the current ones as new ones come in.  These pattern books will give you an endless supply of ideas for your next pattern making project - new necklines, sleeves or perhaps a dress or skirt that catches your eye.  In addition, when you're finished with the book, there are countless dresses, skirts, jackets, etc that can be used for paper doll outfits if you know some little girl that's into paper dolls.

Along the line of the previous post talking about saving scraps, I neglected to mention that you should also save small pieces of fusible interfacings in a small zip lock bag.  These bits can be used later for small areas of hems, appliques, etc that come loose.

I do the same thing with catalogs. In the past I have gotten catalogs with pages of beautiful handmade dresses and jumpers at prices I knew I couldn't afford. But I saved them because I loved the styles so much and knew that I could duplicate the item (or at least come very close)!
